Our read
Written Sun 12:01 am Central, for week 6
Jordan James sits third in the San Francisco backfield behind Christian McCaffrey and Kaelon Black, and the published projection has him at 0.3 points in PPR scoring for week 6 of 2026. He carries no designation on Sunday's report, but he didn't play weeks 1, 3 and 4. Washington allows the second fewest PPR points to running backs, 15.2 a game through week 5, so touches behind McCaffrey will be scarce. He's RB127 in our rest-of-season order, so find a fill-in for this week.
Written Oct 17, from his facts through last season
The case for holding Jordan James ended before it started. He played 16 healthy weeks in 2025 without seeing the field once, and this season he has been active twice with four carries, 15 yards and zero targets to show for it. Weeks 1, 3 and 4 of 2026 he did not play at all, and week 5 he turned two touches into nothing.
The path is the problem, not the talent question. Shanahan still calls the plays, Christian McCaffrey still eats everything, and Kaelon Black has jumped James on the latest depth chart listing. In 2025 McCaffrey took 23% of the targets on this offense and George Kittle took another 22%, so there was barely a crumb of pass game work for anyone else behind him. With Christian McCaffrey healthy there are no scraps worth having. Our preseason number was 66 points, already 20 short of what backs drafted around pick 152.3 have typically delivered, and even that modest outlook assumed 9 games and a role that has not materialized.
He is only 22.5 years old and a fifth-round pick a year ago, so nothing here says he cannot develop. The schedule offers no soft landing either, with weeks 15 to 17 of 2026 sending SF to LAC and KC before hosting PHI. And the passing game leans heavy in this scheme, 56% of situation-neutral plays in 2025, which is not the shape a backup back wants.
But on a roster as of week 6 of 2026 you cannot store that hope on a bench spot while a third-string back in a one-back offense produces 0.8 points a game. We would cut him for any waiver add with a chance at touches, and only revisit if McCaffrey or Black misses time.
