Our read

Written Oct 19, from his facts through last season

Three touchdowns in five games will hide a lot, and for Omarion Hampton it has been hiding everything. He sits at 9.9 points a game through week 5 of 2026, well short of the 14.9 a game our preseason pace assumed, and the reason is the carries. He has lost 0.8 rushing yards over expected a carry, 50 in all, which puts him 35th among the 36 backs with 25 or more tracked carries. That is not a small crack in his game, that is the running part not working yet.

What keeps him startable is Harbaugh and McDaniel feeding him where it counts. He is seeing 41% of the Chargers' red-zone carries and targets in his games and 42% of the touches inside the ten, and three scores are the payoff. The 6 targets in five weeks are the thin part of the profile, and if the touchdowns stall he slides toward the 4.9 he posted in week 5 of 2026. Our 194 for the full season assumed a lot more from the run game than this. Backs drafted where he went before the season, at 22.3, tend to land near 182 points with injuries mixed in, and the ankle that put him on the injury report Out after week 17 of 2025 cost him weeks 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 13 of 2025. That same ankle is what drags the low end of his range down.

The call: he is worth holding in your lineup for now, through the bye in week 7 of 2026 and back after it, and give McDaniel a longer look. If the efficiency has not turned by week 10 of 2026, he is not worth an RB12 slot in your lineup every week.
