Our read
Written Oct 17, from his facts through last season
The knee is what decides this, not the new jersey. He has sat on IR since before week 3 of 2026, so weeks 3, 4 and 5 are gone and he plays nothing while he is there. That is now three straight seasons ended early by the same knee: out from week 15 of 2025 on, out from week 17 of 2024 on, and 11 games played in each of those years. He is 30 and entering his tenth season. The body is telling you something.
Even when he was out there in 2025, the production left. He went from 13.14 points a game in 2024 to 7.85, and his target share fell from 22.8% to 11.9%. The move to LAC does not fix that. Keenan Allen and Ladd McConkey took 43% of the targets between them last season, and the latest depth chart we hold lists Charlie Kolar first among the tight ends, with him second. Our preseason number was 104 points, which is 7.4 a game over the 14 games we expected back then, and in the two weeks he actually played this year he gave 6.4 a game with zero touchdowns. He has not been close to what we wanted, and the bye in week 7 of 2026 arrives right after he could even return.
There is no timetable in front of us, no recent headlines, and no spot worth keeping him on. Cut him loose for a tight end who can play this month, and if he ever gets healthy and back on the field, you can revisit him then off the wire.
