Our read
Written Oct 17, from his facts through last season
The 2024 season was his last relevant one, 57.1 points over 12 games, and everything since has gone down: 1.94 points a game in 2025, 1.2 a game through week 5 of 2026. In five games this year he has 3 targets, 3 catches, 30 yards, no scores. That is not a slow start, that is the ceiling showing itself.
Nothing about the situation argues for a turn. Ferguson is first among DAL tight ends and Schoonmaker is third, behind Brevyn Spann-Ford. Last year Lamb and Pickens took 46% of the target share between them, and Schoonmaker's own share was 3.8%, TE72 among 137 qualifying tight ends. His red-zone usage was just as thin: 2 red-zone touches all season, TE70 among 126 qualifying tight ends, and 0 touches inside the ten, TE87 among 126. Even his average target depth, 7.2 yards, ranked TE31 among 125, so the little work he gets comes nowhere near the goal line. Same coach, same play caller, no new headlines. He has cleared the position's weekly median twice in 16 played weeks across the last two seasons, and 2024 was the only one of his three seasons above TE50.
To his credit, he suits up. No missed weeks in 2026, and none to injury in 2025 or 2024, so if a Dallas tight end beyond Ferguson ever became usable, he would be the natural beneficiary. That is the only case we can build. We would not be the ones waiting on it. The spot on your roster earns more carrying a live tight end than holding out for a role change that two coaching staffs have chosen not to make.
